What will happen at the first appointment?
Our initial session would be 90 minutes, the first 35 minutes being free of charge. The session provides an opportunity for you to see where and how I work, to meet me and to discuss your issues and concerns, it enables us the chance to get to know each other and to decide if we can work together on your issues. I will assess whether I can help you and help you to explore what it is you want from therapy, we will then make a joint decision about whether to commence therapy. Don’t worry if at this stage you are unsure what it is you want from therapy, this is something that can be explored in further sessions. If you do have an idea of a desired outcome then we can work towards your goals, which can be reviewed, revised or changed at any point during therapy.
If you choose to continue working together only the remaining 55 minutes will be charged for. Beyond our first session, counselling and psychotherapy typically involves weekly sessions, at an agreed time, usually lasting 55 minutes. If you arrive late for a session we will only be able to meet for the remaining time of the session.
What happens if I need to cancel an appointment?
Because my counseling and psychotherapy methodology means weekly sessions, and by reserving your appointment each week, I cannot make the session available for anyone else without sufficient notice, I operate a cancellation policy as follows which will be discussed at your first session:
Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will be charged at the full fee.
Sessions cancelled with more than 24 hours notice will be charged at half the full fee.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no hard and fast rule about sessions. It all depends on what you bring to therapy. Some clients find 6-12 sessions enough. Others may continue for several months or even years if they are seeking continual personal development. I believe it’s right to continue as long as progress is being made. Sessions are ideally once a week, leaving gaps longer can result in wasting time re-capping since the last session and will not have the same impact as coming regularly. Also, if you attend on a weekly basis I can guarantee a slot for you, I cannot do this otherwise.
You can withdraw from the contract at any stage, though I usually find it helpful to give two sessions notice to review our work, tie up loose ends, look at future plans and to enable an appropriate goodbye and sense of completion.
Have you had therapy?
Yes, during my advanced training in Psychotherapy, I was required to have 40 hours therapy a year for four consecutive years. The experience enabled me to take responsibility for myself and to live a more fulfilling life. I have personal experience of sitting in “the client chair” and the therapeutic journey, and furthermore understand the need to have a professional practitioner alongside to give support, insight and encouragement.
